Based near Beaverton, Oregon in the United States, Nike (Nike Inc.) is the world’s biggest supplier of sportswear, sport shoes, and other sporting apparel. It is also a major manufacturer of sporting equipment. Founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) by Bill Bowerman and Phillip Knight, the brand officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978, taking its name from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Initially operated as a distributor for Japanese shoe maker Onitsuka Tiger and in 1967, backed with strong profits, the company opened its first retail store in Santa Monica, California. The first shoe sold to the public carrying the “Swoosh” design was a soccer shoe named Nike.
Owing mainly to its “word-of-foot” advertising campaign, Nike shoes reached a 50% market share in the US. Since running its first national television commercial in 1982, the brand has moved on to the now-famous “Just Do It” slogan and onto bigger advertising campaigns featuring the sporting world’s biggest names such as track & field legend Carl Lewis, basketball great Michael Jordan, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, among others.
